Reduced Costs Make Smart Meters More Accessible
The high cost of smart meters had long been a barrier to adoption. Previously, a single-phase smart meter was priced at around Rs20,000, which was significantly higher than international standards. Through government intervention, procurement reforms, and continuous monitoring, this cost has now been reduced to approximately Rs15,000.
This reduction is expected to save the nation roughly Rs25 billion annually, considering around 5 million meter replacements per year. The lower cost will also reduce the financial burden on consumers, making advanced metering technology more affordable and widely accessible. Future international competitive bidding is expected to further decrease prices.
Key Benefits for Consumers:
- Real-time monitoring of electricity usage and better control over energy consumption.
- Accurate, tamper-proof readings with potential for future prepaid metering services.

Smart meters will also improve operational safety and management while strengthening trust between consumers and service providers.
Advantages for Discos:
- Remote meter reading and faster, accurate billing.
- Real-time monitoring of outages and improved operational safety.
A Step Forward in Power Sector Digitalisation
The rollout of smart meters represents a milestone in Pakistan’s ongoing power sector reforms it aligns with the government’s strategy to digitalise electricity distribution and improve service efficiency Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has previously highlighted that overbilling by power utilities is unacceptable and stressed that smart meters are crucial for accurate electricity measurement.
With mobile applications connected to smart meters, consumers can now track electricity usage in real time, gain better control over their energy costs, and experience a transparent billing system this move is expected to transform the way electricity is managed and consumed across Pakistan.
